COSTUME SUMMARY

I’ve been a big fan of Noflutter’s artwork for a long time, and her Burlesque version of Sailor Moon has always been one of my favorite illustrations. To make this costume, I began by constructing an overbust corset made of matte white satin and red dupioni silk bias channels. The corset is fully lined in matching white satin, has spiral steel boning, and metal grommets in the back closure. I created the chest bow out of matching red matte satin, and trimmed the edges in gold lace and crystals. The bolero jacket features puffled sleeves with inlaid white and gold lace, with chiffon flounces and red and gold trim with rhinestone crystals. The skirts were the most fun component to make! I started with a purchased white crinoline, and built a pleated blue miniskirt around it. I layered on top a structured circle skirt with yellow fabric on the edges and horsehair encased inside the lining so it maintains its shape while being worn. In the back I created a large red bustle with hand-sewn tacks, and with matching gold trim and crystals along the hem. To finish the front of the skirt is a draped apron piece made of white chiffon. In the back is a large red satin bow, with interfacing and horsehair to help hold its shape up. I made the shoes out of red ultrapreme fabric, glued to a red high heel shoe around the base. To do this, I patterned a shoe cover on my leg, and accounted for ease with the stretch fabric I was using. To finish off my costume was a beautiful Sailor Moon wig commissioned by Vickie Bane, and I sewed tulle pigtail covers to help keep the hair smooth and tangle-free.
