COSTUME SUMMARY

As a fan of The Apothecary Diaries, I was immediately drawn to Lady Gyokuyou’s elegance and poise, and I knew I wanted to bring her regal look to life through cosplay. Once I had finalized my reference materials, I began by carefully sourcing all of the fabrics, trims, and embellishments that would reflect the richness and subtle opulence of her costume. I started with the bodice, illustrating the intricate floral motif seen in her design and having the file digitized for machine embroidery. This gave me a crisp and elegant foundation to build upon. As I worked through the main construction, I began layering in trims and embellishments that walked the line between accuracy and a bit of personal flair. I experimented with different laces and sparkle elements, ultimately choosing a delicate white and gold scalloped lace for the sleeves, gold lace accents for the waist sash, and a rose gold rhinestone chain for an added touch of glamour. To further embellish the embroidery work, I hand-placed gold rhinestones to catch the light and draw attention to the detailed front panel and bodice. I also added magenta rhinestones to the outer robe to balance the color palette and enhance the rich jewel tones of the overall ensemble. Once the costume base was complete, I did a full try-on to see everything come together. Even though a few pieces were still pinned in place and the accessories weren’t finished yet, I was thrilled with how cohesive and comfortable it felt. Wearing it gave me a real sense of the character’s grace and presence. The final challenge was her elaborate wig. This was my first time creating a “helmet” style wig, and it definitely pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I relied heavily on online tutorials and the advice of cosplay friends to figure out how to sculpt and secure the base. What started off intimidating quickly became one of the most rewarding parts of the process. It opened up new creative problem-solving approaches and gave me the confidence to explore even more ambitious styles in the future. Bringing Lady Gyokuyou to life was a slow and steady process, full of thoughtful detail work and creative discovery. It allowed me to blend faithful recreation with a bit of sparkle-loving flair, and I’m proud of the result.
